Hi Music lovers,

Through my interest in Cassandra Wilson’s music I was reminded recently of Billie Holiday’s 100thBirthday on April 7. Yes, Billie has long departed us physically but doesn’t her legacy live on!

You might know some of the following songs, all of which she made her own in one way or another:Strange Fruit, God Bless the Child, Summertime, Nice work if you can get it, My Man don’t love me, The way you look Tonight, These foolish things, Good morning heartache, The man I love, I’ve got my love to keep me arm, Pennies from heaven, Lover man, Embraceable you, Lady in Satin, Body and Soul, Lady sings the blues, They cant take that away from me, I loves you Porgy, Crazy he calls me, Night and Day, Don’t explain, You better go now.

If you want to join me in remembering Billie’s extraordinary gift do please come along to the Musos at some point in April and perform something she did. And of course you’ll make it your own, the way she made everything she did her own.

And check out this clip of Billie singing Strange Fruit taken from a live performance right at the end of her life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4ZyuULy9zs One is reminded of the struggles she had throughout her life. Yes, they were tough times for black artists in the States, but how much have things changed? Are we really treating all peoples with the levels of kindness and respect that we should?

The Musos is on next Thursday in Montville, and of course we welcome artists performing anything they want, from originals to poetry and beyond (we’ve even had interpretive dancing)!

Here are all our dates for the month:

Thursday 2.4.15: Wild Rocket at Montville (6.30 – 9.30pm)

Sunday 5.4.15: Eudlo Hall (1 – 4pm)

Thursday 16.4.15: Wild Rocket at Montville (6.30 – 9.30pm)

Sunday 19.4.15: Glasshouse Coffee and Tea Merchants (1 – 4pm)

Strange Fruit

Southern trees bear strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees

Pastoral scene of the gallant south
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop
Here is a strange and bitter crop
